General Visits

Although a number of Study Groups organise visits to places of specialist interest connected with their subject areas, it is hoped that we may be able to run occasional trips that are of general interest.

Two that have recently been suggested are to

  • Portsmouth - following the very interesting talk last month by Alan Kingston on the “Tall Ships Youth Trust”, some members have expressed an interest in going to see the Stavros S Niarchos – the brig belonging to the Trust.
During the summer of 2010 when not at sea, the Stavros sometimes comes in to Portsmouth (or Southampton). Therefore any visit – whether to just to go on board or to participate in a day sail – would involve a journey down to the Solent and at least one overnight stay.

  • Bletchley Park - Historic site of secret British code breaking activities during WWII and birthplace of the modern computer.

However following a talk earlier in the year by our MEP, 11 members enjoyed a successful visit to Brussels. Read the report with photo in our December newsletter.

Films at the Cinebowl, Uttoxeter

CHEADLE (Staffs) U3A organise special showings and are happy for members of other local U3As to join them.

Tickets are normally £3.50 each and are purchased immediately beforehand; but can also be obtained in the days immediately prior to the showing by personally calling at the Cinebowl  -  (after 4 pm on weekdays or 10 am at weekends). Members are requested to arrive by 2.00 pm to ensure a prompt start. You are advised to take your U3A membership card, which may be requested to prove eligibility for attendance.

The Cinebowl is located next to the Tesco store and has some dedicated car parking. Parking is also permitted in the adjacent store car parks although it is advisable to avoid the Tesco car park.
