The Landscape
Heritage Group is a group for anyone with a general interest
in history and how the local landscape has evolved over the
centuries. We meet once a month and visit local villages and
towns, historical sites and earthworks etc to explore what has
influenced and impacted on the landscape that we see today.
We look at man's activities through history and also natural
geological features. Visits are very sociable and short walks
are taken at a relaxed pace. We meet at a central point in Ashbourne
to car share. During the winter months we hold indoor meetings
to look at topics such as local Workhouses, ancient trackways
and buildings to meet members' interests. During 2009 our newly
formed group became established with visits to Wetton, Cromford,
Stanton, Lumsdale, Cubley, Frogall Wharf, Matlock Mining Museum
and a look at Workhouses and aerial photography during our indoor
meetings. I would like to thank everyone for their continued
support.
Our meetings
are the third Friday of the month. We shall be outdoors for the
September meeting and indoors for the following winter months.
Our September
17th meeting will be a walk around the Middleton area to look
at how the residents have marked their boundaries with carved
stones to commemorate the millennium. Meet at the "Hug"
car park to car share and depart at 10.00 a.m. or meet at Youlgreave
public car park, on the left as you approach the village, at
10.30 a.m.
Ideas for
winter indoor topics welcome. Some ideas are wartime Derbyshire,
a visit to Derbyshire Records Office, research into lives of
miners from Magpie Mine.
New members and ideas for future meetings are always welcome.
If
there is somewhere where you would like to visit in the future,
please let me know.
